You can apply as a representative of an overseas business if you’re an employee of an overseas newspaper, news agency or broadcasting organisation posted on a long-term assignment to the UK; or you are applying for an extension or settlement as a Sole Representative. Sole Representatives can no longer apply for an initial period of permission in the Representative of an Overseas Business route.
A Media Representative is an employee of an overseas media organisation posted to the United Kingdom on a long-term assignment.
If you’re a representative of other types of overseas business planning to set up its first UK branch, apply for a UK Expansion Worker visa (Global Business Mobility) instead.

Requirements for a Representative of an Overseas Business visa:

- You must be aged 18 or over on the date of application.
- You must be an employee of an overseas newspaper, news agency or broadcasting organisation undertaking a long-term assignment as a representative of their overseas employer.
- Your overseas business or media organisation must be active and trading outside the UK, with its headquarters and principal place of business remaining outside the UK.
- You must intend to work full-time as the representative of the overseas business or media organisation and must not intend to undertake work for any other business or engage in business of your own.
- If you are applying for permission to stay and has, or was last granted, permission as a Media Representative, you must meet all the following:
(a) You must be engaged in full time employment for which your last period of permission was granted and be required by your employer to continue in that role.
(b) you must provide a letter from your employer confirming that you are required to continue in their employment; and © evidence of your salary paid in the 12 months immediately before the date of application and details of the remuneration package you receive.
- You must need to prove your English language at CEFR level A1 unless any exemptions applied.
- You must have enough money to support yourself without help from public funds.
- If you are switching or applying for permission to stay in the UK you must be in the UK at the date of application; and your current or last permission to stay in the UK must not be as a visitor or as a Short-term Student or as a Parent of a Child Student or as a Seasonal Worker or as a Domestic Worker in a Private Household or as a outside the Immigration Rules;
- If you are switching or applying for permission to stay in the UK and has, or last had, permission as a Student, must fulfil one of the Conditions A or B below on the date of application:
(a) Condition A: the applicant must have completed the course of study for which the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies was assigned (or a course to which ST 27.3 of Appendix Student applies)
(b) Condition B: the applicant must be studying a full-time course of study leading to the award of a PhD with a higher education provider which has a track record of compliance and have completed at least 24 months of study on that course.
Visa Duration:
A Representative of an Overseas Business visa can be extended for up to 2 years after the original visa duration of 3 years. When applying to extend as an employee of an overseas newspaper, news agency or broadcasting organisation you’ll need to provide:
- a letter from your employer confirming you’re continuing work in the same role;
- your salary details
Settlement:
You can apply to settle once you have been in the UK for 5 years and you have an on-going job with the same company.
